ZOLL ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF ITS CPR EXTRACT CAPABILITY

Open Design Aligns with Institute of Medicine Recommendation for a National Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Registry

July 16, 2015—CHELMSFORD, MASS.—ZOLL® Medical Corporation, a manufacturer of medical devices and related software solutions, announced today the release of its CPR Extract capability for the ZOLL
X Series® Monitor/Defibrillator. The CPR Extract expands the interface between the X Series and national registries by including 14 measures of CPR quality and five additional time parameters recorded during resuscitation attempts.

A new report from the Institute of Medicine, in part, recommends establishing a national registry to track out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The report highlights that “A national responsibility exists to improve the likelihood of survival and favorable neurologic outcomes following a cardiac arrest. This will require immediate changes in cardiac arrest reporting, research, training, and treatment."

With the new CPR Extract, X Series users who participate in national efforts such as the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) are able to include CPR metrics and receive important feedback on how to improve their cardiac arrest outcomes. The ZOLL CPR Extract is available to any ePCR solution that connects with the X Series.

“The extract was developed in anticipation of the desire for quality-focused customers to fully participate in national registries such as CARES,” said Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL. “Given the recent understanding that high-quality CPR contributes to improving survival, registry participation going forward is an invaluable resource to organizations serving the public.”

“In order for these out-of-hospital registries to gain traction, the flow of data needs to transcend proprietary databases,” said Greg Mears, MD, Medical Director of ZOLL. “ZOLL’s open data exchange policy means the CPR Extract capability is available to any X Series user no matter which ePCR system they presently use.”

About the X Series

The X Series combines the clinically superior therapeutic capabilities of ZOLL defibrillation, pacing, and CPR assistance with advanced monitoring parameters. Key among the X Series’ features is the unequaled ability to assist with improving CPR quality to keep oxygen-rich blood flowing. ZOLL’s proprietary See-Thru CPR® minimizes the duration of pauses in CPR to enable rescuers to see the underlying rhythm. ZOLL’s Real CPR Help® provides real-time CPR feedback, and a built-in sensor measures the depth, rate, and effectiveness of chest compressions.

About the CARES Registry

The CARES program is an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest registry that has the potential to serve as the recognized registry for the US. Established through a collaborative effort between Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CARES was started in 2004 and has since expanded both nationally and internationally. Currently more than 800 EMS agencies and over 1,300 hospitals in 36 states representing a population footprint of 80 million people participate in the program.
